How to Move a Site to Another Server
Solution
There are two ways to move your files to another host: ask your current host or do it your self.
The easiest way to move your site from one host to another is to ask your current host. They can (and should) create a backup of your entire site including all database files and put it in a tar.gz format. When they have informed you that this has been completed, ask your current host to perform the move. They will be happy to do that for you, and for them, it is as easy as clicking a couple of buttons AFTER your current host has made the backups.
The second way is all on your shoulders. For your CPMage Site, you should
1) Log into current hosts' cPanel
2) Navigate to Files/Backup. Make a backup of your home directory and databases. When you click on Backup, you will see a link to Full Backup and Partial Backup. Depending on how many sites you have installed you may want to choose partial backups. Now, go away and do something for awhile as the speed of the backup will depend upon server load. It could take 10 minutes to several hours. You will receive an email when the backup is complete.
When you received notice the backup is complete, you have two options to retrieve: via cpanel or via
ftp.
I find the quickest method is via
ftp.
Download the backup file(s) to your own PC ... be sure to note where the download folder is located.
Cpanel Method to download:
1. Login to cpanel. navigate to Files/backups.
2. Click on the Restore Download option.
3. Click on a file to download to your computer. Depending on the size and your network speed, this could take hours ... so just go off and do something while it's happening.
FTP Method to download:
1. login to your FTP Site and navigate to / (where your wpmage.tar.gz file is located)
2. Find the file that looks something like this:
backup-12.7.2009_07-57-08_yoursite.tar.gz
3. download using your FTP client method. Mine simply drags over or I can right click on the file to download.
Now, login to your NEW host/cpanel and restore the backup to that host by clicking on the Files/Backup Link and then choosing Restore from the two options presented. You will browse for the backup on your pc. Click on the file you want to restore. If you chose partial backups be sure to choose all the files to restore.
After all is restored you should be able to login to your new cpmage and view your sites.
